Capital Hiking Club hikes 52 weeks a year.
For complete information on our convenient bus departure schedule, please review our general information below, which follows information on our MD Bus and VA Bus pick up locations. All times are approximate departure times; hikers should arrive 10-15 minutes earlier to avoid missing the bus.
Rockville / North Bethesda, MD - Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station - bus shelter nearest to Metro Station entrance between Metro Station and parking garage (Wisconsin Avenue / Rockville Pike / Rt. 355 exit off I-495), departing at approximately 8:35 AM.
Centreville - Park and Ride Lot (Route 29 and Stone Road), departing at approximately 8:45 AM.
Moonlight Hikes
Meet at the parking lot across from Old Angler's Inn (10801 MacArthur Blvd., Potomac, MD) by approximately 8:15 PM.
General Information:
Most hike listings on the schedule include either 'MD bus' or 'VA bus' to indicate the bus's departure routing. The 'MD bus' is generally used for Maryland, Pennsylvania and some West Virginia hike destinations while the 'VA bus' is generally used for Virginia and some West Virginia destinations. As some hikes involve hiking in more than one state, please be sure to read the schedule carefully to determine the bus routing being used for that particular day's hike.
Occasionally, a bus will depart only from the 16th and I (Eye) St. location with no other suburban stops if the destination is east of DC. Also, local hikes are sometimes scheduled which do not necessitate the use of the bus, but which either involve meeting at the trailhead or carpooling to the hike's location. In these cases, the schedule will contain the appropriate information.
When making a reservation, hikers should let the leader or co-leader know at which pick-up point they will board the bus, the names of any additional people in their party, and a home or cell phone number.
Hikers should arrive at the bus stop at least 10-15 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive in order to avoid missing the bus.
People who are driving to meet the bus are encouraged to use either the Vienna or Centreville bus stops for VA bus routings or the Grosvenor bus stop for MD bus routings, as these locations have an abundance of free parking spaces. Limited amounts of free parking are available at all other pickup locations except for Rosslyn, which has no free parking. Metered parking at 16th & I (Eye) St is free, but is limited to 2 hours and should therefore not be used.
Walk-ons are welcome at any bus stop, but cannot be guaranteed a seat if the bus is fully booked. The bus will return to the same stops after the hike. The bus usually returns before 6:30 PM, but may return earlier or later depending on the hike.
