For splendid Mid-Atlantic area hiking, you don’t necessarily have to head to the mountains. There’s also surprisingly good tramping in the wooded, rolling hills just north of Baltimore – specifically at Gunpowder Falls State Park, our destination today. Starting at Bunker Hill Road, we’ll take the Mingo Forks Trail to reach the Gunpowder South Trail, which we’ll use to hike along a very picturesque section of rapid-filled Gunpowder Falls, all the way to Prettyboy Dam, where the short hike ends. From the dam, medium and long hikers head back in the other direction, using a combination of the Highland and Gunpowder South Trails. Medium hikers stop at the York Road parking lot, while long hikers complete an additional circuit on the Panther Branch, Sandy Lane and Gunpowder South Trails.

It’s transition time between summer and fall in Shenandoah, and you’ll get a taste of both on this gem in the Park’s North District. From Rt. 612 in the Shenandoah Valley, we’ll climb the west flank of the Blue Ridge on the lovely Thornton River Trail to the Skyline Drive, where the short hike ends. Others turn north on the Appalachian Trail to either Elkwallow Wayside, where the medium hike ends, or on to the long hike terminus at Hogback Overlook.

PATC Map 10 / VA Bus

Today’s hike has it all: fall colors, dramatic waterfalls, and awesome views. We’ll begin the fun at Rt. 600 with a climb of famous White Oak Canyon and its six towering waterfalls. At the Skyline Drive, short hikers stop, while medium and long hikers add an out-and-back jaunt to the 360-degree view from the overlook atop Millers Head. Medium hikers finish at Skyland Lodge; long hikers also end there after a loop to the summit of Stony Man (another view!) via the Appalachian and Skyland-Big Meadows Horse Trails. Mason-Dixon Trail/Peavine Island/Oakland Run/Farmers Market, PA

Mason-Dixon Map 5 / MD Bus $25 (nonmembers $28).
Long hike: 8.5 mi., 2650 ft. ascent, 2150 ft. descent. Short hike: 7.5 mi., 2550 ft. ascent, 2050 ft. descent.
A hike on one of the most beautiful segments of Pennsylvania’s Mason-Dixon Trail (where we were rained out last spring) and a stop at the farmers’ market in Delta, PA, are the dual highlights of this varied outing. The market, which drew rave reviews during our 2009 visit, comes first. Then the hike! Long hikers begin at Peavine Island on the Susquehanna River, short hikers at Lock 12. We’ll all pass through picturesque Oakland Run Gorge, ending at Posey Rd.
